What is Nehru’s Fulbright for Masters and Doctoral Research Fellowships?
Nehru’s Fulbright for Masters and Doctoral Research Fellowships is a unique scholarship designed solely for all highly motivated students who have completed their course equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree. Also, those willing to register for a Ph.D. at an Indian institute can apply. Students applying for master’s degree courses must have at least three years of professional work experience. Benefits and Nature of Awarded Fields for the Scholarship Program
For the Master’s Program:
Benefits provided for the master courses will include round-trip economy class air travel (from home city to the host institute), living expenses, tuition and academic fees, accident and sickness coverage as per U.S. government guidelines, and J-1 visa support.
The scholarship will be granted for two years. The candidates can pursue their degrees from the U.S. colleges and universities. Below is the eligible area/field in which they can study the courses:
- Journalism and Mass Communication
- Urban and Regional Planning
- International Legal Studies
- Higher Education Administration
- Women’s Studies/Gender Studies
- Economics
- International Affairs
- Public Administration
- Environmental Science/Studies
- Public Health
For PhD courses:
Benefits that will be granted include a monthly stipend, round-trip economy class air travel tickets, J-1 visa support, applicable allowances, an Accident and Sickness Program with U.S. guidelines, and modest affiliation fees.
For students who wish to pursue a Ph.D. from an Indian university, they have to pursue it from the following eligible fields:
- Education Policy and Planning
- Anthropology
- Chemistry
- Earth Sciences
- Computer Science (cyber security, digital economy, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data analytics)
- History; Language/Literature/Linguistics
- Political Science (including International Security and Strategic Studies)
- Neurosciences
- Public Policy
- Materials Science (with particular emphasis on environmental applications)
- Public Health (including pandemic preparedness and comprehensive surveillance (genomic surveillance, sewage surveillance, sero-surveillance)
- Energy Studies
- Psychology
- Women’s and Gender Studies
- Urban and Regional Planning (covering smart cities and waste management).
- Visual Arts
- Mathematical Sciences
- Sociology
- Public Policy
- Physics
Note: In the case of both master and PhD courses, here are some exclusions provided:
- The funds are insufficient to support any of the candidate’s family members.
- Grants provided may not cover all the costs, and some funds may need to be requested from other sources.
- No financial support will be provided to the dependents.
Eligibility Criteria for applying to Nehru’s Fulbright for Masters and Doctoral Research Fellowships
Here are the eligibility criteria stated for both the Masters and PhD course candidates:
Masters Program:
- The applicants must demonstrate experience in community service and leadership.
- Candidates must have a full-time paid experience of 3 years of work experience in their relevant field.
- Language proficiency score of TOEFL/PTE or IELTS score should be 6.0
- Students must possess a minimum of 55% marks in their undergraduate courses.
For the Ph.D. program:
- Participants must be registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian University.
- An Indian citizen
- Must have experience in research related to their specified field.
- Candidates must be able to identify resources in the U.S. and abroad.
- Good health and pursuing pre-doctoral research since or before November 1, 2023.
- The Ph.D. thesis submission must be at least three months before the Fulbright-Nehru grant end date.

Note: These are for pre-doctoral level research. PhD degree candidates and those at the final stage of Ph.D. thesis submission won’t be considered.

Last date to apply for this scholarship
The last date to fill in the online application form for the Master’s Program is 15th May, and for the Ph.D. fellowship program is 15 July 2024.
