Benefits of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA)

A monthly stipend of Rs 80000 will be given to all selected students. Further, the fellowship program is categorized as follows:

Regular Postdoctoral- Fellowship:

Under this fellowship program, all Ph.D. degree holders are eligible to apply. Also, the candidate’s research experience should be the same as that of the current research at IIA. Simultaneously, the researchers can work independently to generate their thesis and collaborate with our group of researchers. Candidates who have submitted their thesis can apply for the postdoctoral researcher role.

The duration of this Fellowship is 2 years. It will be extended for a year if needed. Fresh candidates will be given Rs 47000 monthly. At the same time, Rs 49000 per month will be assigned to postdoctoral applicants with experience of a total of 1-2 years. Overall, Rs 10000 will be granted as an extra allowance apart from the fellowship amount. The candidates can use the money for book grants and house and rent fees. Accommodations are subject to availability.

Eligibility Criteria:

Eligibility criteria set for Regular Postdoctoral- Fellowship:

The candidates have to be less than 36 years of age.
Students who have submitted their thesis in areas of mathematics and physical sciences are eligible.
The thesis must overlap with the research carried out by the researcher at IIA.
1-2 years of experience applicants can also apply.
Applicants should have cleared their Ph.D. program from a renowned university.

2. Post Doctoral researcher:

Applicants are invited from candidates who have submitted their thesis under the postdoctoral- researcher fellowship program. Furthermore, selected students will be granted a monthly stipend amount of Rs 35000. The program is for a duration of 1 year. The accommodations are as per availability. Additionally, the institute’s rules will suggest the house rents and medical allowance as set by the committee.

The postdoctoral- program allows fresh Ph.D. candidates.

3. Chandrasekhar Postdoctoral- Fellowship

Extremely hardworking, bright, and meritious candidates with excellent academic performance can apply for the Chandrasekhar Postdoctoral Fellowship, a fellowship of Rs 75000 per month with two years of experience. Candidates with more than two years of experience will receive Rs 80,000 monthly. The primary advantage is the Chandra Fellows can choose their topic for research. Altogether, they can even collaborate with other research groups in the institute. Economy class flight tickets and travel expenses will be provided while submitting assignments.
